Transabdominal Ultrasound Measurement of Pelvic Floor Muscle Activity When Activated via a Transversus Abdominis Muscle

چکیده

Aims of Study This study aimed to investigate the relationship of pelvic floor muscle and transversus abdominis (TA) muscle activity during a pelvic floor (PF) muscle contraction. Sapsford et al (1) investigated this relationship using EMG and found there to be consistent co-contraction between these two muscles. Due to this finding, it has been hypothesised that the pelvic floor muscles can be trained indirectly via the transversus abdominis muscle. This is despite the fact that randomised controlled trials have shown that specific training of the pelvic floor muscles is effective in the treatment of stress urinary incontinence (2,3). It has also been shown that a strong pelvic floor contraction is required for effective closure of the urethral sphincter (4). However, a transversus abdominis contraction is a moderate strength, stabilising contraction. To understand the activity of the pelvic floor muscles when performing abdominal tightening of the deep abdominal muscles, transabdominal ultrasound was used to measure the displacement of the pelvic floor muscles, a reflection of a contraction, during this manoeuvre. Transabdominal diagnostic ultrasound has previously been shown to be a valid and reliable measure of pelvic floor muscle activity (5).It was hypothesised that the pelvic floor muscles can be activated more strongly when instructed specifically to contract the pelvic floor rather than indirectly via the transversus abdominis muscle, as measured by a greater displacement of the pelvic floor when imaged on ultrasound.

Impact of Different Body Positions on Bioelectrical Activity of the Pelvic Floor Muscles in Nulliparous Continent Women

We examined pelvic floor muscles (PFM) activity (%MVC) in twenty nulliparous women by body position during exercise as well as the activation of abdominal muscles and the gluteus maximus during voluntary contractions of the PFMs. Pelvic floor muscle activity was recorded using a vaginal probe during five experimental trials. Activation of transversus abdominis, rectus abdominis, and gluteus max...

Investigation of transabdominal real-time ultrasound to visualise the muscles of the pelvic floor.

Clinical measurement of pelvic floor muscle activity commonly involves techniques that are both physically and psychologically invasive. This study investigated transabdominal application of ultrasound to measure pelvic floor muscle action. The specific aims were to establish the face validity of ultrasound measures of displacement of the posterior bladder wall as a reflection of pelvic floor m...

Comparison of Abdominal Muscle Thickness with Vaginal Pressure Changes in Healthy Women

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to verify the efficacy of a pelvic floor muscle exercise program by comparing subjects' muscle thickness with changes in vaginal pressure. [Subjects] Two groups of female participants without a medical history of pelvic floor muscle dysfunction were evaluated. The mean age of Group I was 33.5 years and that of Group II was 49.69 years. [Methods] The parti...

The Effects of Precise Contraction of the Pelvic Floor Muscle Using Visual Feedback on the Stabilization of the Lumbar Region

[Purpose] The purpose of this study is to verify whether precise contraction of the pelvic floor muscle (PFM) using visual feedback actually affects the thickness of abdominal muscles. [Subjects] The subjects were 29 healthy adults in their 20s who consented to participate in this study. [Methods] This study provided visual feedback on PFM using one ultrasound device and identified changes in t...
